Are there are any current situations in the world that relate to the novel? What are they, and how do they relate? Does the novel shed any light on how current situations could be resolved or "fixed"?

I saw a movie named 'The Mist' and I think the situation in the movie is similar to this novel. In the movie, people are attacked by monsters in the mist. They are locked in a market which is similar to being left in an island. In the movie, a woman who is a religious fanatic is similar to Jack in 'Lord of the Flies'. As the situation get worse and become acute, people bagin to follow the woman and start losing their reason. The ending is also alike to the novel. The movie ends with the main character being rescued but their families are all killed. Similarly, the novel ends with Ralph being rescued by a pilot.
